A Friend of the Family

Produced and Directed by Randall Neece
Donald N. Broun and Dr. John D. Golenski, SJ, Co-Producers

Presented by Bioethics Consultation Group and Kaiser Permanente

Although medical care providers often have to convey "bad news" to patients, they are usually uncomfortable doing so. This unique video teaches physicians communication techniques for discussing difficult subjects. It presents three office visits in which three physicians are confronted with the challenges of discussing difficult, emotional issues with their patients. At first the three physicians have problems communicating despite their good intentions and caring manner. A brief commentary follows each case in which more effective communication techniques and approaches are presented. Then the scenes are replayed to give the doctors a "second chance" to discover just how potent a little "verbal vaccine" can be.

In the first vignette Dr. Barnes is trying to focus his patient on the disquieting task of making a Living Will. In the second Dr. Rawlings has to disclose a life-threatening diagnosis of breast cancer to her patient. In the third vignette Dr. Lyman must advise an elderly patient that because of the patient's increasingly limited physical capacity, it is time for him to seriously consider an extended care facility.
