The Buffer Zone:
The Mental Health
Professional Produced by Norman Baxley and Associates, Inc. This video delineates the psychosocial problems commonly encountered by mental health professionals. It points out that the need for mental health services precedes infection and actual diagnosis; it begins with the very first contact with someone from the "worried well," someone who has been tested for HIV and received either a positive or negative result. It encourages mental health professionals to offer a patient with AIDS sympathetic, nonjudgmental, expert informational services; the patient needs to be able to rely upon the professional to protect confidentiality and serve as an advocate for the patient. Diagnosis of AIDS brings shock, confusion, and disorientation, and the impact cannot be ameliorated by 10 minutes in the doctor's office. Nearly everyone with AIDS will require and should receive follow-up, counseling, and therapy to deal with the diagnosis. "This richly informative program should be required viewing for all mental health and counseling professionals." Death Studies Color, 25 minutes,
