Of Critical Importance: AIDS Precautions in Radiology

Produced by Envision, Inc.

Featuring Dr. William Schaffner and Dr. Richard Heller
Vanderbilt University Medical Center

This program will help radiologists and staff in radiology departments minimize the risk associated with care of patients with AIDS by identifying and reinforcing the use of universal precautions as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control. After reviewing how AIDS is and is not transmitted, the program recommends that staff treat all blood and body fluids as if they are contaminated with HIV and that they wear appropriate barriers to prevent transmission. Of Critical Importance highlights the effective use of gowns, masks, gloves, and goggles during the following procedures: angiograms, insertion of contrast during uro-radiology, insertion of barium enema catheters, percutaneous biopsy during CAT scans, ultrasound guided thoracentesis. It discusses necessary precautions to avoid needlesticks and cuts and demonstrates proper cleaning and sterilization techniques for instruments and surfaces which come into contact with potentially infected blood or body fluids.

The primary message of the program is that while health care workers' risk of becoming infected, even after direct exposure to contaminated blood or body fluids, is quite low, appropriate barrier precautions must not be ignored.
