AIDS: The Street War Executive

Producer, Lon Holmberg

This hard-hitting video focuses on the very important work of Lee Jenkins and Sterling White, two members of STARR (Street Team for AIDS Risk Reduction), a division of the Georgia Department of Human Resources. These recovering addicts take information, caring, and access to resources where they are most needed--into the streets. Both Lee and Sterling see AIDS as a spotlight on long-time social problems, and they are committed to provide a personal example of how individuals in high-risk communities can make positive choices for their lives despite the pressures of poverty and racism. Lee broke a long-time drug habit on his sixth time in a VA- sponsored 12-step program, and he believes that he was finally successful as a result of a higher power. He believes the key to reaching minority addicts is changing what he describes as "programming" -- ingrained attitudes of passivity and avoidance in the face of social and economic problems. For Sterling, coming to grips with his addiction meant accepting the repressed rage that he saw as a result of "being born a black male in a white man's world."

Their experiences and insights provide a valuable look at why so much of the money and effort at controlling AIDS has had limited effect. But perhaps the difficulty of working with drug users makes the victories that much more satisfying as shown by Sterling's story of a former addict "now seven months' clean" and his new perspectives on life.
