No More Crying: Reducing Distress During Venipuncture Produced by Norman Baxley and Associates, Inc.
Drs. William Redd and Paul Jacobsen of Cornell University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have successfully implemented some highly effective yet simple behavioral interventions to reduce the distress of children who must routinely undergo highly invasive and painful diagnostic and treatment procedures. These methods directly benefit the parents and health care providers as well as the child. No More Crying demonstrates the use of distraction, limit setting, and positive reinforcement in winning the cooperation of both child and parent, reducing their anxiety, and giving them some measure of control over these very difficult situations. The video emphasizes the importance of the nurse in foreseeing children's behavioral problems and sensitively using these interventions to prevent them. Nurses explain how to carry out a proper clinical assessment and how to implement behavioral treatments. No More Crying focuses on an acute care setting, but the methods demonstrated in the video can be applied to other areas of medicine in which child distress is a factor. "The video and pamphlet would be an excellent resource for nurses, residents, physicians, and lab technicians who actually perform the procedures as well as for parents, child life specialists, and others who are providing support to the child." - Children's Health Care "This smartly produced video will be of much interest to pediatric oncology nurses and all of us wanting to make a terrible thing a little bit better." - Oncology Nursing Forum Color, 14 minutes,
