Healing Our Children Produced by Echo Bridge Productions
This video provides, in three segments, information on the symptomatology, assessment, and treatment of traumatized children. Each segment includes information that will support therapists and clinicians with the experience and commentary of experts from several mental health disciplines. Tape 1: Symptomatology(28 minutes) highlights the experience of Richard Rhodes whose book, A Hole in the World, makes accessible the painfully honest voice of the traumatized child. Dr. Robert Pynoos, Dr. Jean Bellows and Dr. Luisa Medrano also define and discuss the complex symptoms that may result from intra-familial trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder, attachment disorders, dissociative states, and affective disorders. Tape 2: Assessment(24 minutes), explores ways that the therapist can meet the child's need to legitimize the painful experience and examines the timing and appropriateness of disclosure. In this context a number of clinicians discuss counter-transference reactions to the children's trauma. Through children's drawings, play, projective testing, and genograms, therapists are aided in teasing apart the elements that contributed to and result from the trauma. Tape 3: Treatment(29 minutes) focuses on therapeutic exercises and activities, demonstrated and discussed by Dr. Beverly James, that allow the therapist and child to work together to address such issues as self-blame, body integrity, emotional constriction, and overwhelming memories. This segment takes a close look at the difficulties encountered in helping a child begin to explore feelings and ends with a poignant discussion of the legacy of trauma and the movement toward healing.
