Not Always Who They Seem

Produced by Echo Bridge Productions

Children who have been abused, neglected or exposed to unexpected early or unexplained violence don't see the world as safe and predictable, and normal development is derailed. Not Always Who They Seem provides motivational support and encourages compassion when working with traumatized adolescents.

In this eye-opening 3-part video series you will meet some very remarkable people and gain insight into the lives that many youth experience. Vinnie, Christine, Bill, and Clarinda have lived daily with violence, addiction, homelessness, prostitution, depression, and rage. Unique as their stories are, they are also quite similar. Because for all four of these young people, being a child was dangerous.

This series challenges audiences to take another look at the teenagers with whom they are working--to see them not as "troublemakers" or "lost causes," but as young people who have been torn by childhood trauma and have had no appropriate avenue of expression. These are young people in desperate need of support and understanding. The series also includes interviews with health professionals, counselors and psychologists working with young people in foster care, group homes, youth detention facilities, day treatment, special education and outreach. They offer a realistic picture of the challenges and rewards inherent in working with these teens and provide a model for the process of healing and growth.

"NOT ALWAYS WHO THEY SEEM is powerful, insightful, thought provoking and at the same time humbling. As I watched the courage of each person telling their story, I thought this program should be mandatory viewing for all professionals who work with youth. Even the most cynical could not help but be affected by the emotion, hurt and eventual growth." .....Judy Hatswell, School Psychologist
