The DNR Dilemma Produced by Norman Baxley and Associates, Inc. Content Consultant, Jimmie C. Holland, MD
The DNR Dilemma examines some of the difficulties physicians face in communicating
with patients and families about the sensitive issue of Do Not Resuscitate
orders and explores the conflicts that may arise among health care professionals
faced with this situation.
Part I:
When the Time Comes, 18 minutes, dramatizes the anxieties and concerns
of Dr. Alan Buckner, an oncologist who is reluctant to discuss resuscitation
options with his terminally ill patient Mrs. Harkness. When he finally
does discuss the subject with Mrs. Harkness, he finds that although the
interaction is difficult, he is able to confront his own uncertainties
and carry out the discussion in a responsible, professional way. Part II:
Professional Perspectives, 25 minutes, reprises selected portions of Part
I and adds the commentary of health care professionals who are intimately
affected by the DNR issue. Among those commenting are physicians (both
attending physicians and house officers), nurses, a social worker, an
ethicist, an administrator, and an attorney. These professionals address
the situation presented in the dramatic scenario and also speak movingly
of their own experiences and feelings in regard to this difficult area
of their work. "An excellent film that should be seen by all health professionals and students as well as by hospital administrators, social workers, and attorneys." - Choice Color, 43 minutes,
