No Heroic Measures Produced by Norman Baxley and Associates, Inc. Content Consultant, Michael L. Perlin, JD Technical Advisor, Lisa Maloy, RN, MS, CCRN
No Heroic Measures examines some of the issues raised in the Claire Conroy
case in New Jersey: *Who has the right to make a substituted judgment to
withdraw life support from incompetent patients? *Should food and hydration
be considered extraordinary means of treatment when they are mechanically
delivered? *How can the individual's right to privacy be balanced with the
ethical dilemma hospital staff face in carrying out proxy requests to withdraw
life support?
This dramatic film portrays Judy Brett's struggle to have her incompetent aunt's feeding tube removed. The story is told within the context of court hearings held in the nursing home where her aunt resides, and in a courtroom. The court hears opinions from physicians, a nurse, and a professor of ethics concerning the appropriateness of the request. In contrast to the legal and philosophical arguments presented in these hearings, additional scenes present the emotional unrest and ethical quandary often experienced by those staff responsible for carrying out a no treatment order.
