This new video series takes a close look at the issue of domestic violence, at the attitudes and lack of knowledge that perpetuate it, and at the significant role health care and other professionals can play in providing assistance and support to battered women. It was designed and produced by an interdisciplinary team of professionals in medicine, nursing, dentistry, psychology, social work, pastoral counseling, criminal justice, victim advocacy, and the women's sheltering movement.

Video #1: 30 minutes, explores many of the feelings that define the lives of battered women-- fear, shame, isolation. As they describe their experiences, a profile of their abusive partners emerges: someone who has learned that violence is a very efficient and effective way of controlling another person.

Video #2: 17 minutes, expands upon the fundamental responsibility of health care providers to recognize, discuss, and document abuse of women. Practical examples are given for institutional procedures and protocols and for the kinds of triage questions that professionals need to feel comfortable asking.

Video #3: 30 minutes, provides behavioral models of appropriate health professional responses to battered women. Six dramatic vignettes (to be shown individually or together) feature examples of appropriate assessment, intervention, and referral strategies for health professionals in dental settings, hospital emergency rooms, mental health and therapy settings, clerical settings, and physician general practice and clinic settings.
