The video explores directly the relationships that support domestic violence in conversations with an abuser and with two victims. It demonstrates that behind the statistics and the rhetoric are real people grappling with a complex of issues including not only parenting skills and gender roles but the fundamental ways in which we interact with the world. Particularly compelling is the conversation with an abuser as he reevaluates his perspective and struggles to build a new way of life. He helps to untangle some of the ways battering is supported as he explains in a candid interview, at the time of his arrest, "I didn't feel that I had done anything all that wrong." Despite the fact that arrest alone reduces the repetition of battery, the video makes clear that many women are reluctant to seek help. The idea that they are responsible is impressed on them not only by the abuser but also often by the legal system as well. This simple but powerful video is an excellent introduction to domestic violence for law enforcement professionals, judges and lawyers, as well as social workers and health care providers.
