Laughing Matters Produced by Rebecca Hantin
This remarkable video will permanently change the way you think about people with mental illness. Everyone involved with the video, including the producer, have been diagnosed with illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression. It features the Project Return Players, a 12-year-old improvisational comedy group with a unique method for eliminating the social stigma of mental illness--humor. A major goal of their performances is to demystify mental illness by encouraging open discussion and inviting members of the audience to ask questions. Brief personal stories of the players are interwoven with scenes of rehearsals and performances. All walks of life are represented--janitors, homemakers, successful professionals; anyone can be a victim of mental illness. Laughing Matters does not focus on cure, but rather emphasizes learning to cope through a combination of therapy, medication, and taking one day at a time. This funny, moving video will strike a chord in mental health professionals, community groups, students, and the general public; it is appropriate for showing to ages 10 to adult. Color, 32 minutes,
