The Mensendieck system, which was developed in Europe nearly 100 years ago, is a simple and very effective approach to correcting the poor posture and faulty body mechanics that underlie most back pain. Karen A. Perlroth, a graduate of the Mensendieck Institute in Amsterdam and therapist and educator, first explains the anatomy of the lower back and then describes correct posture and breathing techniques. With realistic models, Ms. Perlroth demonstrates how to perform some simple exercises with proper breathing to strengthen and relax the muscles in and around the back.

After demonstrating the exercises, which are recommended for prevention and rehabilitation by the Stanford University Health Improvement Program, Ms. Perlroth shows how to integrate correct posture into everyday activities such as sitting at a computer terminal, lifting objects, and sleeping, to prevent or eliminate the causes of lower back pain.
